Dear Michael,

In order to become a HUD certified housing counselor, an individual must have passed the HUD Housing Counselor Certification Examination and work for a HUD Housing Counseling Program Participating Agency. An individual is not considered certified until they are employed by an agency. As an individual you can seek employment from the agency of your choice. A list of HUD participating agencies can be found here. You can search by the state or zip code you are located in.

HUDHousingCounselors.hud.gov Support provides technical support and general program information related to the HUDHousingCounselors.hud.gov training and certification exam program. I have a question on how the 1-year counseling experience is proven when becoming an approved agency. We started our non-profit for housing, which will provide counseling and education resources. I am the person who will become certified by the agency. I have a lot of past experience myself counseling and teaching. Would that count or does the agency need to have a licensed counselor for a year? Any information you can provide would be helpful. Thank you!
