Where can I find descriptions for the HUD Housing Counselors Training course?
The Training Couse overview provides module topics, summaries, and learning objectives.
Do I get a certificate when I complete a training course?
No. The training is optional, and you will not receive a certificate for completion.
Do I have to take the training all at once?
No. The interactive online training course will bookmark the last page you visited in a module and your knowledge check answers will be saved. When you return, you will be asked if you’d like to continue where you left off.
Training - Details
The online training consists of 15 modules that vary in length. Shorter modules take about 30 minutes, and longer modules may take up to 90 minutes to complete.
The online training is interactive, but it does not include audio.
The Study Guide consists of 15 modules and a Glossary that vary from approximately 20 to 60 pages. A single file of the entire training is not available.
The Support team is not able to provide physical copies of the Study Guide. You are welcome to print the training as befits your needs to prepare for the exam.
Where can I find a practice exam?
A practice exam is available to prepare for the Certification Exam. You can sign up to access the practice exam.
Do I have to be a housing counselor or be employed at a HUD-approved housing counseling agency to take the training or practice exam?
No. Anyone can take the HUD Housing Counselors Training and the practice exam.
Training - Audio
Dear COUNSELOR,
The online training is interactive, but the videos do not include audio. However, the downloadable study guides do have an audio option. To access this open the Training Center within your account, scroll down to and click on Download Study guide.
Once the page loads click on the desired module to download PDF. Open the PDF and within Adobe go to View > Read Out Loud > Activate Read Out Loud.
Will I be required to complete the training?
No. The training and practice exam are optional; however, you are encouraged to utilize the materials to prepare for the exam.

Study materials are available on this site. You can choose from two study methods: an interactive online training course or a downloadable Study Guide in PDF format.
